Quest Items

ok so maybe some of you can help me with this. Back when i used to play RTS they didnt have quests so this whole thing is new to me. How do you find out where certain items are that you need for the quests? I know a lot of them can be taken from NPC's when you kill them but im having a hard time collecting jester hats and shiny swords for the quests im doing now. I know this really sounds like a noob question but like I said we didnt have the quests before. Thanks

keep hitting the jesters, they drop both i believe just not every one you hit drops, its kind of a pain in the ass
